How to check your internet connection from the Conveyor app

To check your internet connection, go to Settings and scroll down until you find "Network Test" under "Support & Reference."

Open Network Test and tap "Start Test" in the upper right-hand corner. You will see a progress bar showing that the test is in progress.

After a few seconds, the results will populate for four variables: Latency, Jitter, Download Speed, and Upload Speed.

What do these numbers mean?

Latency is the round trip time it takes for a data packet to travel from a user to a web application, measure in milliseconds. Any time you make a request for a website, the request travels to a server, the server delivers the webpage, and that data shows up in your browser. Latency is the time it takes for all of that to happen.

A smaller latency number is better. Typically anything under 100ms is good, but some networks will provide speeds as low as 10-40ms.

Jitter is the variability of latency over time, also measured in milliseconds. Any streaming data is sensitive to jitter. For example, high jitter (more variability) can explain why video calls may suddenly lag before coming back just fine.

Download Speed is a measure of how many megabits your internet can download per second. Higher download speeds are preferable, but you can get away with slower speeds for less data-intensive activities.

For example, you would likely be fine web browsing and entering text in the EHR with just 1.0 Mbps. For video conferencing, you will want at least 3 Mbps. While you might make do with less at home, even small medical practices will want an internal network with at least 10 Mbps download speed.

Upload Speed is similar to download speed but measures the speed at which data can be sent from your device to the network.
